Hi,

A friend and I are planning on doing a roadtrip of Eastern Europe this summer. We're thinking of flying to Belgrade and buying a cheap car there and driving west to Croatia and then around the coast to Albania and then east to Istanbul. Does anyone know how much it might cost (we're talking the cheapest car that you can legally drive on a road - hopefully a Lada!) and how we might get insurance? And how much that will cost? We're both UK citizens so visas etc won't be a problem.

Also, any tips for particularly good places, either in Serbia or the rest of the region, would be much appreciated!

Thanks for your help!

Nick

You could probably find a Yugo for 500 EUR. But then, I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to drive with Serbian plates all the way through Croatia and Albania. I don't know how much are the registration fees, but someone here will know probably. You will also have to acquire a "green card" for driving abroad, I think....

There is a big used car open air market near Belgrade (Bubanj Potok), so I think you could find there what you want, but I guess it should be wise to go there with some local, just to be sure you're not buying a complete junk.

And there are always adds, so you can find a car like that too.

Plan sounds great! Enjoy the ride!

Much cheaper cars you can find in eastern EU countries, like Slovenia,Hungary...Used cars in Serbia are quite expensive because it's forbiden (or there are very high taxes i'm not sure) to import them.So Serbia is not really a country where you wanna buy a used car.
