Posted July 31, 2014 Greetings,Travel plans have changed since I first posted on my other thread. I'll be going to these places instead: Novi SadUziceNisLeskovacVranjeBelgradeQuite often, there are well-regarded restaurants known to local folks that may not be on the tourist radar. I'm not looking for fine dining but reasonably priced, local food and drink. If you don't mind sharing, please post your favorites here. Reply
Posted August 1, 2014 (edited) What, am I the only English speaker around? I hope you're not a vegetarian. In Serbia, grilled meat, and a lot of it, is pretty much the norm, particularly in simpler restaurants/kafanas. Southern Serbia -- Vranje, Niš and particularly Leskovac -- is considered the Kingdom of Grill, and wherever you go, and however ugly the restaurant looks, be sure you'll get a cheap, huge and excellent meal, so a recommendation is not even necessary. I'm not into prices there, but I wouldn't be too surprised if you get, like, a portion of 500g of grilled meat for around 5€. While in Novi Sad, you can also find grilled meat, but you might better try some of local, Austria-Hungary influenced cuisine. Vojvodina is famous for its river fish. If you're into pedaling, you could rent a bike (http://nsbike.rs/english.html) and roam the Danube coast (see e.g. http://www.ciklonaut.com/svrbiguz/dunav/03.htm and the map therein). See http://goo.gl/maps/1vAkQ. On the way, you will find Bata Pežo restaurant ( B ) on the town outskirts, where grilled catfish (only that!) is perfect. Čarda kod Braše ( C ) is further away, and offers cheap and simple fish meals. There, you can even cross the Danube with a ferry and return on the other side. If you're not into such adventures, in the city you can find:Plava frajla, SPENS, wide range of "domestic" cuisineAstal šaren, is well, grill, but it's in the heart of the city, and it's cheap and tastyAqua Doria, just below the "Duga" bridge on Petrovaradin side, domestic cuisineDon't be afraid to eat even in restaurants at the Fortress plateau ("Terasa" in particular). The prices are surprisingly reasonable for the location, and the food is good. Užice is in a mountainous area, so it is famous for dairy products and dry meat (prosciutto). And grill, of course. The most famous (and unhealthy ) local meal is komplet lepinja (flatbread filled with calories) and "Šuljaga" is the most renowned. Other than that, I don't know the city. We have a plenty of Belgraders around, so I hope some of them will jump in for their city. Edited August 1, 2014 by Duya Reply

Posted August 1, 2014 A nice little restaurant in Novi Sad is "Kutlača bar" in Maxima Gorkog street. You can have a lunch there for 250 dinars, which translates to 2.2 euros There's also a very cheap Chinese restaurant in Bulevar Oslobodjenja. Not sure about the name though. It's close to Futoška pijaca. A lunch there costs also around 250 dinars. If you're looking for a real kafana, there's "Ribar" in Dunavska street, one of the last remaining old style bars in the center. Reply
