Over three years, ALS, the incurable neurodegenerative disease slowly decreased 50-year-old Li Xiaozhong’s ability to control her muscles. Li thought that the sooner she died, the less she would suffer and burden her loved ones.

To her despair, Li had survived her third suicide attempt. Realizing that she had lost the ability to end her own life, Li began to look for people on the internet to assist her. Some failed business people offered their services.

Finally, Li reconnected with Zhang Gongjiang, and agreed on a price of 20,000 yuan ($3,140). On the day of the attempt, Zhang helped unscrewed the gas canisters. But the door to Li’s bedroom hadn’t been properly closed and was letting the gas escape.

Three months later, she approached Zhang again to negotiate a second attempt using poison powder. But Li soon concluded that the poison was fake, because five minutes after eating it nothing happened.

Li asked Zhang to return the money. But Zhang blocked her on WeChat. Less than a week after reporting to the police, Zhang was arrested. He returned the money.

The "Blood Qur'an" is a copy of the Islamic holy book, the Qur'an, claimed to have been written in the blood of the former president of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, over the course of two years in the late 1990s. Saddam commissioned the book in 1997 on his 60th birthday, reportedly to give thanks to God for helping him through many "conspiracies and dangers". He explained his reasons for commissioning the book in a letter published by the Iraqi state media in September 2000: "My life has been full of dangers in which I should have lost a lot of blood ... but since I have bled only a little, I asked somebody to write God's words with my blood in gratitude."

Then, local authorities investigated the video. Soon after, they announced that the video’s creator had convinced Jike’erbu to perform in front of the camera in exchange for shoes, clothes, and school supplies. The house was set up to look dilapidated, and his face made up to look disheveled.

In Liangshan, this poverty porn was not an isolated case. Many of the region’s Yi-ethnicity inhabitants rely on short videos or livestreams to earn a living, often putting poverty on display to attract more views. However, this strategy clashes with the local government’s narrative of poverty alleviation.
