Posted July 2, 2006 Dobro veče, Kako si?, Three friends and I are heading to Novi Sad from the UK for Exit, looking forward to it? .gif' alt='::'>. There is no Glastonbury this year, so we thought it would be great to get "out there" and explore. I'm trying very hard to pick up some Serbian, so I have been on the Serbian School website. It's hard for this old dog to learn a new trick? So, a couple of quick questions. I was reading the Money section on Serbia Travellers about not using Euros, but Dinar. I guess this is still correct? Does anyone know if Dinars are available at UK Banks without notice? Also, so I don't arrive in Belgrade knowing nothing, where is the train station in relation to the airport, anyone know? Hvala David? Reply
Posted July 2, 2006 You cqn leave airport with bus number 72 (I think the number is correct) it is the only bus from airport to town. It will take you to place called Zeleni venac (the last stop) and from Zeleni venac to the bus or the train station there is 10 minutes walking downhill. You can easily excange money. There is a lot of excange offices so that wouldn't be a problem. Enjoy your staying in Serbia! Marina :-D Reply
Posted July 2, 2006 Hvala, dobro sam . (Im fine, thank you.) not using Euros, but Dinar. I guess this is still correct? Yes, it is, but it's not a trouble. Of course you can arrive here with euros and exchange them for dinars. I guess you can do it at airport. 1 E = 85 dinars. where is the train station in relation to the airport, anyone know? There is no railway station near Belgrade airport. You can take bus number 72 to get to city from airport. And if you want to catch a train to Novi Sad immediately, without visiting Belgrade (we call it BEOGRAD) city, ask people in 72 bus about To?in Bunar (pronunce something like Toshin Boonar) station. Get out from bus there and walk 50 meters up to train station (there is no station building, but the trains stop here). Here is timetable (we call it RED VO?NJE, ? like in word usually) for the line To?in Bunar - Novi Sad, taken from http://www.yurail.co.yu/eng/Index.php. voz train polazak departure dolazak arrival 3400 05:12 06:44 3402 11:28 12:51 2400 12:53 14:19 2402 15:11 16:39 2404 20:13 21:39 3404 23:13 00:39 If you're goin directly to concert, don't go to Novi Sad station, get out from train in Petrovaradin station. To say station in serbian, try saying STANICA. Our A iz like A in name ZAPPA. And C is real latin C. Izvinite excuse me gde je where is stanica station To?in Bunar/Petrovaradin ? Wellcome to Serbia , David, and have a good time :weed:. Reply
Posted July 3, 2006 Hvala lepo! Great information, will be very useful! We are staying at a hotel in Novi Sad (Hotel Park), but I understand it is only a short walk from the hotel to the festival (I gave up camping a long time ago ;-)). If anyone knows Novi Sad, and where the hotel is, how far away is it from Exit? Ok, cool, get some Dinar with Euro's over there, I guess Serbian Dinar are going to be in short supply in Reading, UK. Have a good summer, and to any Exit festival folks, Ziveli! Reply
Posted July 3, 2006 without visiting Belgrade (we call it BEOGRAD) city That is for the last day But we are going to Subotica and Palic after the festival, should be good. Reply
Posted July 3, 2006 well, it didn't seem to me like a short walk between Hotel Park and Petrovaradin fortress I'm not gonna philosophing about this as there are more than enough Novi Sad locals on this board, but ehm, I spent good 45minutes walking between two locations. However, maybe there were shortcuts unknown to me or whatever, I dunno whatever, hotel Park is a good stay, therefore not necessary budget-friendly :-D about money issue. you can also bring your UK pounds and change for dinars just in any exchange office, no need for bringing euros, although euros are unofficial valute just about everywhere in the region =] have a nice time. Posted July 3, 2006 Hotel Park is a five star hotel ! Anyway, if money is not the issue for U, it should be pretty nice staying there... As Marko said, it's 30-45 minutes of walk at least, but it's not that terrible. There are city buses that U can use, if U're not a walker... In front of Hotel U can catch bus no. 11A and cruise around the city to the Danube bank, where U can walk across the river to the fortress... U can also use line 6 which goes along Futoska street, again to the river bank. I'm sure that there'll be no problem with exchanging pounds. Cheers! Have a good time... Posted July 3, 2006 OP, I live in London and this'll be our second EXIT. We also tried to get dinar before the festival last year, but were told it was impossible even to order them from Barclays. As it turned out, we were worrying for no reason - there's cashpoints everywhere in Novi Sad and Belgrade, and I (with Visa) and my boyfriend (with Switch/Maestro) had no problems using our cards in any machines or shops while we were there. Though my coworker just mentioned today that last year he had problems finding machines that would take his Maestro card, so draw your own conclusions. We're going to rely mostly on cashpoints again this year (with a wide variety of cards) but also bring some Euros as a backup. Oh, and Hotel Park is a bit of a hike from the rest of the shopping district and the festival, but it's looooooovely inside and airconditioned, and taxis are very cheap so you don't really need to walk back after a long night of dancing! Posted July 3, 2006 Hey squirrellypoo, how goes it. Yeah, went into Reading today, and was basically told that I'd have no hope getting SD in the UK. I too am going to just rely on cards, but make sure of taking a large enough amount out each time so as to avoid the pesky charges. I don't see much point in taking Euros as "officially" they can't be used anyway. Is there much point? Oh, sorry, another question, how far is the train stop from the hotel? Well, I might as well know everything Cheers Reply
Posted July 3, 2006 I don't see much point in taking Euros as "officially" they can't be used anyway. Is there much point? There's certainly a point if you're taking the train from Budapest like we are, because the conductors ONLY accept Euros for the couchette/bed supplements, which we found out the hard way last year! (even though neither Hungary nor Serbia use Euros, the train starts in Vienna so the Austrian conductors only accept Euros, or if you ask reeeeeally nicely, they may accept pounds) Otherwise, they're just going to be our "padding money" this year just in case the worst happens and our cards get lost or stolen, we'll still have cash in a readily changeable currency so we don't starve. Oh, sorry, another question, how far is the train stop from the hotel? Well, I might as well know everything The train station is kinda far away. I'm sure someone here can tell you a better route, but we just took a taxi when we were going out to the posh hotel. One tip I can tell, you, though, that was passed on to me from a Serb in our train compartment from Budapest (no euros, but at least we made some new friends!) - apparently the taxis just in front of the train station will rip you off, but the ones off to the left-hand side are much cheaper. Can anyone from Novi Sad refresh my memory on which companies/colours are the cheap taxis again? Reply

Posted July 3, 2006 Budapest - We're getting the train from Belgrade, this isn't the same train is it. Reply
Posted July 3, 2006 Budapest - We're getting the train from Belgrade, this isn't the same train is it.hahah, no! Budapest and Belgrade are two separate cities in opposite directions from Novi Sad! Our train will eventually go through Belgrade on its way to Sofia, but not in the direction you'll want. The Budapest - Novi Sad train takes about 6 hours and is overnight, which means if you want a bed or coucheette to sleep in, you need to pay a supplement. The train from Belgrade - Novi Sad is about 2 hours, which isn't even enough for a cat nap. Don't worry, you'll be fine. Reply
Posted July 3, 2006 I thought we were talking cross purposes somewhere along the line there? At this rate I will be lucky to find Heathrow? How I envy most European people. They speak their own language, and can just as easily speak to others in different languages. Then compare that with your average British person who struggles with a sign for a toilet cleaner if it's in a different language? I guess we're not all that bad. Posted July 3, 2006 easy to get from train station in NS to hotel Park. If you're not taking taxi (why not? , then walk down the boulevard which is just in front of a station (there's no other one, can't miss). You'll walk down, walking on the right side (in the direction of other traffic =] heh, not the same like in UK , and when you get on semi-big junction and oberve that on the left side, opposite the boulevard, you can see police station (there's like flag and police cars , then you turn right from the boulevard from the spot you're standing, and continue walking that street for another 5 minutes or so, and there you are. All in all, max. 20 minutes of easy walk, down two big streets =] this is how it looks on a map: http://www.virtualnigrad.com/mapa/mapa_novi_sad.htm your station is 'ZEL. STANICA' just near that graveyard, so you walk in front of it, and go down 'BULEVAR OSLOBODJENJA' then turn right to 'NOVOSADSKOG SAJMA' street, and that's all hotel Park is that little bed sign in Futoshki park. Posted July 3, 2006 Marko, U r now officially qualified as local, that is Novosadian Congrats! Ok, another way to get from the train station to the Hotel Park is just catch the same bus line that I mentioned before, 11A and 4-5 stops after, ther U are, for just 25 SD which is way cheaper than cab. I don't use taxis but can say that the reliable taxi unions are "Maxi Novosadjani", "SOS" and "Vojvodjani"... At this rate I will be lucky to find Heathrow How I envy most European people. They speak their own language, and can just as easily speak to others in different languages. Then compare that with your average British person who struggles with a sign for a toilet cleaner if it's in a different language I guess we're not all that bad. I see U Brits still don't lack that humour of Urs. Or is it humor U say? Colour or color ? Which one is original and which one bastardized ? Posted July 4, 2006 It's nice to see there are English people who know their way around our little Novi Sad.? When you arrive, you can let us know via this forum, so we can share our knowledge of the town and have some Cheers! Reply
Posted July 4, 2006 Cool, I think a beer would be called for, and I'll get the first "round" in as this has been the most helpful forum I have used for ages! But please, don't mention the World Cup, or Christiano Ronaldo? You could say "Your colourful English humour", but that would maybe when using, "f@@@", "S@@@" and other such words. "Color" is the US spelling, and wouldn't be the "Queens English"? Right, we fly Thursday morning, so may check back before Wednesday night for any more useful ideas. Cheers Guys Drago mi je Reply
Posted July 4, 2006 If I am reading the map correctly, Hotel Park is next to Futoski Park and Exit is at "Petrovaradinska tvrdava", I'm trying to read the Serbian Language map rather than the Exit Festival English site? Just read that LTJ Bukem isn't playing, that's a pity. Reply
